I am honored to serve as the President of the Georgia Association for Women in Higher Education (GAWHE). GAWHE is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to providing professional support for women educators, administrators, and researchers in Higher Education in Georgia. GAWHE is part of the ACE (American Council on Education) Women’s Network national system of networks within each state, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The ACE Women’s Network is supported in Georgia by GAWHE officers and members, a state coordinator, institutional representatives, and a presidential sponsor. Our dear President, Dr. Jacobs, has been a longtime supporter of the organization and is a presidential sponsor. Among the many initiatives we host in-person and virtually, GAWHE offers an annual conference that features stellar keynote speakers, valuable presenters, a leadership panel, and a presidential panel. Our conference is a three-day event at the end of February when women gather, learn, and network. Every year GAWHE awards three Louise McBee scholarships to talented women and their mentors. We are expanding and including more opportunities for volunteers. If you are not a member yet, I kindly invite you to join us: www.gawhe.org. I look forward to serving you. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. Certified Peer Educator Training - Four students have completed training to become Certified Peer Educators. Additional trainings are be scheduled for Spring 22. Kognito - Alcohol and Other Drug Misuse Prevention goes beyond compliance to set students up for success. This interactive simulation: Meets students where they are: Designed to engage non-drinkers, light to moderate drinkers, and frequent drinkers with customized messaging. Uses evidence-based practices: The program incorporates evidence-based prevention methods including social norming, bystander skills, and values and goal-setting. QPR - QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor. QPR can be learned in our Gatekeeper course in as little as one hour. Nigel Cares - A partnership with Christie Campus Health (CCH) to provide a 24/7/365 mental health line that students can call anytime for in the moment help with issues both big and small. In addition to the phone service, CCH offers five free sessions of tele-counseling or in-person services with a private therapist. CCH also includes free tele-psychiatry for students, reducing the barriers of cost and wait time for students who would benefit from medication. The JED Campus - JED Campus guides colleges and universities through a collaborative process of program and policy development, with customized support by a dedicated campus advisor to help you build upon your existing student mental health offerings. This fouryear strategic partnership allows you to assess and enhance the work already being done, as well as foster positive, systemic change on your campus and in your community.
