UNG JOINS THE SOLAR POWER COMMUNITY With the recently completed facilities expansion on the Gainesville campus, UNG now has an operable solar power installation. UNG Facilities staff were able to recommission an existing solar array previously installed on one of the former Lanier Technical College facilities which was renovated into the Health Sciences building. The array, utilizing a combination of new and existing solar panels, is now sized to produce 64 kilowatts of energy during peak summer daylight periods. The system is expected to pay for itself in under 10 years which is generally less than the payback of new systems. This new system will also aid in understanding the pros and cons of solar power systems. Colleagues in the Lewis F. Rogers Institute of Environmental and Spatial Analysis (IESA) will be using the data gathered through the system for instructional and research activities. The Office of Facilities will be monitoring the long-term maintenance requirements and cost savings with a view toward potentially developing new systems in the future. Questions regarding this new system can be directed to Adam Strzemienski (Adam.Strzemienski@ung.egu) or Ken Crowe (Ken.Crowe@ung.edu). 9
