In 2019, I came to the United States from my home in Almere, Netherlands, because of Coach Patrice Parris. He not only wanted me to play for the UNG Men’s Soccer team, but told me about all he wanted to achieve on and off the field. Pat encourages us to be students first and athletes second. He wants us to be winners on the field while also achieving academic excellence. When I came to Dahlonega, my family stayed in Almere, so I became independent very quickly. I was starting a new experience with college while also balancing taking care of myself – bills, health, food, transportation, etc. Although my parents reside in another country, they are extremely proud that I am able to go out on my own, to a different country, earn my degree and achieve my dreams. I’m currently a senior studying business management and my goal is to work for Tormenta FC, the Statesboro Soccer Club. I have learned a lot at UNG and want to inspire others to pursue their dreams. Don’t be afraid and don’t limit yourself. The whole world is open to you – for whatever you want to do. I have learned from alumni who have come and gone, and a lot I will take with me from Pat. He has taught me how to be patient and that preparation is important. Being the first recipient of the Martin Parris Soccer Scholarship means the world to me. Without it, I would not have been able to achieve my dreams at UNG – on and off the field. “It’s an honor. I hope that when the next recipient is awarded this scholarship that they will honor it and cherish the gratitude it represents. You donated out of love, because you wanted to, not because you had to. Thank you for donating out of generosity and love.” MEET ELWYN Martin Parris Soccer Scholarship To donate to the Martin Parris Soccer Scholarship, scan this QR code or visit ung.imodules.com/mparris SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT MARTIN PARRIS SOCCER SCHOLARSHIP The Martin Parris Soccer Scholarship provides support for men’s soccer student-athletes who represent the core values that represent the life of Martin Parris.: an athlete who exemplifies integrity and character on and off the soccer field.
