DONOR IMPACT REPORT 2 0 2 2

This year, the University of North Georgia is celebrating our Sesquicentennial—our 150th anniversary, which gives us the special opportunity to reflect on our heritage, celebrate our achievements, and look toward our future. In January 1873, after several years of planning and effort, North Georgia Agricultural College officially opened its doors. The college’s first catalogs indicate that the founders wanted to provide quality, free educational opportunities to the young men and women of northeast Georgia, many of whom could not afford to travel great distances for education. In the 150 years since our founding, we have changed names and have grown to five campuses and nearly 19,000 students. However, our commitments to quality, affordable education and leadership development opportunities remain steadfast. That distinctive thread ties us all together— regardless of the decade, legacy institution or home campus. Our university’s founders knew then, as we know today, the value of a college education and its role in strengthening communities. Universities are special places where students are exposed to new ideas and opportunities, where knowledge is created and advanced, where a sense of belonging and shared experiences build lifelong relationships. At UNG, in particular, students also learn to both serve and lead others. One of my highest presidential priorities has been raising funds to expand financial support for students, and, since 2017, the UNG Foundation has awarded almost $14 million in need- and merit-based scholarships. On behalf of our students, thank you for your generosity that made this possible. Someone once said that giving is not just about making a donation; it is about making a difference. Just as the university’s founders were driven by a mission to support high quality, affordable opportunities for students to pursue a college education, countless leaders have come forward in the decades since then to invest in the university and in generations of students. Those gifts have had an immeasurable impact in the lives of students, for their families, and for our region and state. Our future is bright, and I know the next generation of donors will be equally inspired to build upon our proudest traditions and the legacies of scholarship, leadership and service that are the hallmarks of the University of North Georgia. Thank you for making a difference for UNG and our students! Bonita C. Jacobs, Ph.D. President MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

OUR MISSION The University of North Georgia Foundation, Inc., supports the mission of the University of North Georgia by promoting philanthropy from all constituents, managing and investing its assets responsibly, providing financial assistance for students, faculty and staff, and serving in an advisory role to the President of the University. UNG’s students remain the core of our purpose. It is a special responsibility and calling to support our students’ journey to realize their potential and to prepare them for career success or continued education. While UNG remains nationally recognized for affordability and value, one of the barriers to education for many students in our area is cost. Because of the loyalty and generosity of our alumni and friends, many financial barriers have been removed, providing our students the freedom to grow into our next generation of leaders. EMPOWER MINDS

I am a senior majoring in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry. I was given the incredible opportunity to begin research my freshman year after participating in the STEM lab – an interdisciplinary lab incorporating physics, chemistry and biology into one class. After applying to colleges with my best friend, and making the decision to go to the University of North Georgia, I didn’t know what to expect stepping onto campus for the first time at orientation. My professors encouraged me to get more involved on campus and helped me find opportunities to succeed in my passion for working in the lab. After graduation, I plan on attending graduate school for either synthetic organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry. My end-goal is to complete my PhD and work in a medical lab creating new anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications. I want to give back by creating new medicines with less severe side effects and that are easily accessible to those in need. “Thank you for giving back. The scholarships I’ve received have made all my hard work and everything I’ve achieved thus far worth it. I am grateful to represent Doctors Simms and Doctor Hair in receiving their scholarships. I am truly honored to have my name associated with theirs.” I completed my collegiate career at UNG in December 2021, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology on a Pre-Dental track. I am currently studying at Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha, Nebraska. As a first-generation college student, everything was new to me – from college applications to stepping foot on campus for the first time. As I learned more, I was inspired to pass on my experiences to other first-generation students. I was the founder and president of the PreDental Club at UNG. I wanted to create a community of pre-dental students where we could learn from each other and share the wealth of knowledge with freshmen and other firstgeneration students. Even as an alumn, I still check in with the members to see how they’re doing and offer advice. Since the age of 12, I knew I wanted to be a dentist. With that goal in mind, I knew my education would be expensive. My parents always encouraged me to achieve my dreams, and told me not to worry about finances, but it was always in the back of my mind. “Not only didmy scholarships pushme to keep going, knowing that it was possible to continue my education and attain a degree, but they helped to relieve a large financial burden onmy family who’ve always wanted a better life for my brothers andme. You have played a significant part inmy acceptance into dental school. MEET VANESSA First-Generation, Non-Traditional College Student I am a proud UNG student who attends classes during the day and works night shift at a local warehouse. I’m studying management and aspire to work in healthcare after graduation. “I encourage my co-workers to start college and begin working toward a degree. It’s been a long road, but will be worth all the hard work.” I became a single mother early in life and have worked several jobs for 18 years to ensure that my two sons and daughter could be successful in school and earn their own degrees. Despite the odds being against us, we are succeeding in our careers and as a family. One of my sons is a Software Developer and the other works for a university in Cybersecurity. My daughter earned a basketball college scholarship and is now an Accountant. Being first means that you may experience challenges navigating college and its confusing roadmap of new terminology, processes and procedures. UNG is one of only 10 institutions in Georgia with this designation. First-Gen Forward acknowledges UNG’s dedication and commitment to applying and sharing evidence-based practices by providing resources, addressing challenges, and developing knowledge to continue to advance the success of first-generation students. In the 2021-2022 academic year, the Gen 1 Mentoring Program added another freshman cohort of 30 students. The program connects first-generation faculty and staff with first-generation students for formal mentoring relationships. Students in the mentoring program have an average GPA that is a half-point higher than their first-generation peers. FIRST GENERATION ACHIEVERS

7 The University of North Georgia has always been a part of Allen Earls’ life. As a Dahlonega native, he learned to swim at the age of 10 at the UNG pool and played ping-pong over the summers on campus. When it came time to choose where he would get his college education, UNG was the natural choice. Allen graduated Magna Cum Laude as a proud member of the class of 1986 with his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting with a minor in Computer Science. From Macon, Georgia, Terri graduated from Berry College and began her career at UNG working as the Resident Assistant Director. UNG would not only provide an education and employment for the Earlses, but would be the place where they would meet for the first time. In Terri’s words, “we met and the rest was history.” Together, they’ve been successful in business, entertainment, and their careers and life. Their success, blended with their giving nature has allowed them to give back to UNG and make an impact on current and future students. “We want them to be inspired,” said Allen. “You can start with humble beginnings and achieve great things. We want to form a chain reaction of inspiration – it helps make the world a better place.” The Earlses have supported UNG in many ways, but recently dedicated a room in the Cottrell Center for Business, Technology & Innovation. When asked why they supported the new center, Allen stated, “Business is in my blood. It was the right opportunity that married my passions for business and philanthropy. My faith in God and my degree from UNG prepared me to achieve great things, even beyond business.” Not only do the Earlses want to foster success in students, but anyone with an affinity for UNG. “There’s nothing too small to give,” Terri said, “If each of us does our part, it creates this masterpiece that changes the lives of others. You don’t have to just give money, but you can also give your time, including being a mentor. Giving to UNG is an opportunity to help transform lives and to be a part of something greater than yourself.” DONOR SPOTLIGHT MEET ALLEN & TERRI EARLS

BUI LD COURAGE

I grew up in a remote, underserved area of Central Florida. I never thought that I would be so fortunate to receive a college education. My high school cross-country coach encouraged me to think bigger – to pursue a college degree. As I explored the numerous options, I discovered the University of North Georgia and the Corps of Cadets program. With the assistance of scholarships at UNG, I will be able to achieve my goal, that I believed to be unreachable when I was younger. I am a senior and pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in the hopes of becoming a Hospice nurse. I am set to commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army at the end of this academic year. I was selected to participate in the Army’s competitive Nurse Summer Training Program during the summer 2022 semester and was based at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. This year, I proudly served as an executive officer of my company, and as a captain in the UNG Boar’s Head Brigade. I also served as a corps academic mentor in years past and was selected to be the Boar’s Head Brigade senior academic mentor for the 2021-2022 academic year. Mentoring has been important to me throughout my college career; I love giving back and helping incoming freshmen. “I would have never imagined that I would be here. Your faith in wanting me to do the best I can, I can’t put into words what that means to me. I hope to one day pay it forward as you have done for me. Thank you so much!” I proudly serve as a Cadet Staff Sargeant and a squad leader in the Golf Company for the UNG Corps of Cadets. My older brother was a UNG cadet and inspired me to pursue an education at UNG and seek a career in the United States Army. I am a junior studying criminal justice with plans of commissioning after graduation. My goal is to join the Army National Guard military police and serve as long as I am able. I have a passion for learning and like to be involved on campus outside of what I do with the corps. I am the founder and president of the Unarmed Combat Club. We incorporate mixed martial arts, boxing, wrestling and jujutsu into our practice and training. I am also a voting member of the Student Government Association. “I hope that one day I can give back to a student the gift that I received.” Not everyone gets the opportunity for scholarships like I have. Growing up, I never wanted my parents to worry about me, being one of five kids. Not only does this relieve the burden of paying for college, but my family as well. Thank you! 11 The CPT Jeremy Alan Chandler Leadership Scholarship was created in 2006, in memory of CPT Jeremy Alan Chandler. CPT Chandler, a proud UNG graduate of the Class of 1997, paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. It is his family’s wish that recipients of the scholarship will carry on Jeremy’s legacy through achieving their own goals. The CPT Jeremy Alan Chandler Leadership Scholarship provides support for members of the Corps of Cadets who are actively pursuing a commission in the U.S. Armed Forces, participate and compete in Ranger Challenge and demonstrate potential for leadership. Jeremy’s parents, Alan and Jonnie Chandler travel annually to UNG, to present cadets with the scholarship. Along with the scholarship, the Chandlers give cadets a photo of Jeremy and a memory bracelet so that they may carry Jeremy with them throughout their time at UNG and in their future service. “It makes me happy that students see his scholarship as more than a check. They have embraced our family and want to know about Jeremy. It really says something about the patriotism of these amazing cadets.” SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT CPT JEREMY ALAN CHANDLER LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP “As amother, I don’t want Jeremy to be forgotten. FOSTER PERSEVERANCE

I graduated from the University of North Georgia in May 2022 with my Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Special Education. I am now studying for my Elementary Education Reading Specialist Master’s degree at Virginia Tech. After graduating, my goal is to be an Olympic pole vaulter for USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics. I’ve always known I wanted to work with young kids after college. I used to help my grandmother watch the children she was a nanny for and worked gymnastics summer camps for 3-to-7 year old kids. In high school and college, I worked with elementary school children in an academic setting. My favorite part is watching a student finally understnd after struggling with a concept or subject. Beyond the classroom and off the field, I enjoy playing piano and guitar, and being outdoors. One of my favorite parts about being at UNG is the mountains that surround us. “What really helpedme was being able to move away fromhome to pursue an excellent college education and continue to compete in pole vaulting. I wouldn’t have been able to do that without scholarships.” As a transfer student to UNG, I didn’t have the same experience choosing UNG as an incoming freshman would. What I didn’t know as a freshman starting out at Delta State University, was that UNG would become the place where I would study finance, meet my best friends and continue to play the sport I love. I would encourage other transfer students to consider UNG in their search. It’s not just a place, it’s a family. Everyone knows each other and you make relationships that will last a lifetime. “It truly has been a blessing. You gave me the chance to come to UNG, take classes and live my dream of playing college golf.” I try to inspire my fellow students and teammates to work as hard as they can and enjoy everything. You only get four years, make every moment count. MEET NOAH Transfer Student Golf Team Scholarship MEET JOURNEY Roy E. Bottoms Scholarship Nighthawk Athletics Giving 13

In 2019, I came to the United States from my home in Almere, Netherlands, because of Coach Patrice Parris. He not only wanted me to play for the UNG Men’s Soccer team, but told me about all he wanted to achieve on and off the field. Pat encourages us to be students first and athletes second. He wants us to be winners on the field while also achieving academic excellence. When I came to Dahlonega, my family stayed in Almere, so I became independent very quickly. I was starting a new experience with college while also balancing taking care of myself – bills, health, food, transportation, etc. Although my parents reside in another country, they are extremely proud that I am able to go out on my own, to a different country, earn my degree and achieve my dreams. I’m currently a senior studying business management and my goal is to work for Tormenta FC, the Statesboro Soccer Club. I have learned a lot at UNG and want to inspire others to pursue their dreams. Don’t be afraid and don’t limit yourself. The whole world is open to you – for whatever you want to do. I have learned from alumni who have come and gone, and a lot I will take with me from Pat. He has taught me how to be patient and that preparation is important. Being the first recipient of the Martin Parris Soccer Scholarship means the world to me. Without it, I would not have been able to achieve my dreams at UNG – on and off the field. “It’s an honor. I hope that when the next recipient is awarded this scholarship that they will honor it and cherish the gratitude it represents. You donated out of love, because you wanted to, not because you had to. 19 Jenny Muller started her philanthropic journey in high school with the YMCA of Georgia. Her senior year, she and the other seniors were challenged to give $100 back to the YMCA five years after graduation. Each year in college Jenny went back and volunteered for the YMCA Youth Assembly, and after five years had passed, gave her $100. The challenge aimed to teach students that giving back to organizations that they are involved with and to those who have helped them grow is important. UNG Cadet Commander, Jimmy Sprouse shared his love of the corps with Jenny’s high school JROTC class. This played a role in her choice of the University of North Georgia for her education. “I had no idea how much the decision to join the Corps of Cadets would impact my career and my life,” she said. The corps taught her about people, how to communicate and be a mentor, how to collaborate with others and how to be a force of positive growth. Jenny was the first female company commander at UNG, and attributes her success to having a ‘guardian angel’ along the way. Becoming a female leader in the corps was not easy, and Chad Allessio, another UNG student in the Corps of Cadets, was her guide on bearer and kept her laughing, reminding her not to take herself too seriously. Chad passed away during her senior year, and she knew she wanted to give back in his honor. In 1994, when Chad’s parents created the Chad Allessio Memorial Scholarship Fund, she could not donate much, but knew as she grew in her career that she would give more. With this sentiment, she wants to, “encourage others to give back to education because in some way you’ve been touched by it and it helped make you the person you are today.” She explains that if you are not in a place financially to give, that you can give your time, mentor students and connect with them as they embark on their college journey. When asked about what it means to be a UNG Alumna, Jenny gave one word, pride. She’s filled with pride to be associated with the caliber of students who have graduated, who are currently enrolled and students to come who will be smarter, stronger and more creative than those who came before. She said that being an alumna of UNG is being a member of an elite winning and achieving team. Also giving her time and talent, she serves as development committee chair on the UNG Foundation Board of Trustees. ALUMNI GIVE BACK MEET JENNY MULLER Class of 1994
