Diversity & Inclusion Veterans transitioning out of service are accustomed to being told what to do, how to do it, and when to do it; options are few and far between. When they arrive at UNG, they are given an array of options: lists of different majors and minors to choose from, different course options, and a wide range of class times and modalities. Transitioning to the college environment and adjusting to this new culture creates stressors that most traditional students do not experience. UNG’s student body comprises over 6% of Military-Connected students, over 400 of those being Veterans. Military-Connected means any student currently serving (Active Duty, National Guard, and Reservist), a Veteran, or a spouse or dependent of a Military Service Member. To maintain a Military Friendly university, UNG faculty and staff should strive to be aware of the barriers and unique transitions our Student- Veterans face and the resources available for these students. To help increase faculty and staff awareness, Nighthawk Engagement and Student Transitions (NEST) offers Green Zone training. Green Zone provides an opportunity to increase knowledge of experiences and barriers our Student-Veterans face and the qualities they bring to our campuses. Learn more ways to support Student-Veterans at UNG by becoming a Green Zone Advocate here. 7
